The Horrors of the Internet...

I have been hesitant to get onto my computer. Last week I have very vivid and real feeling dream, and I guess I am still a bit shocked! I don't usually dream, and if I do they are usually gone the minute I wake up. I usually remember only one dream every 6 months or so, and I feel quite lucky that I never have nightmares or horrible dreams. To make up for this I am a sleep talker, and I have had many interesting conversations with friends about what I say in my sleep!

My dream was long and detailed which I am not going to explain here, but basically the gist is that my online identity was stolen. All my passwords, IDs and accounts were not mine any more. I had no access to anything, and when I did manage to get on to facebook everything had been deleted and changed.

I have been really slack about passwords, as I have SO MANY different accounts and log ins that I have to remember. A few were the same with only a letter or number changed, and I didn't really care. Everything was linked back to my email account, and on that I have a very long and hard password that even I have trouble remembering. I thought that if anything was changed, then I just click on the "forgotten password" link, and change it in my emails.

So this weekend was spent changing passwords and log-in details. I made them as crazy and different as possible, but really… how the hell am I supposed to remember them all?!?

The dream was a real shake up, so hopefully nothing happens in real life!

May I suggest a password manager? I use Lastpass. https://lastpass.com/ No two passwords I have are the same, and thanks to lastpass I only need to remember 2-3 of them :D

Change your passwords often. Use alphanumeric ones, as they are difficult to guess. There are many password managers out there, take your pick. I use a VeriSign secured tool - Billeo to manage my passwords. It’s secure and also compatible with Firefox 3.5.
